To Protect Your cat read well
Pet safety during a disaster is essential. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, etc. are happening all around us and as a pet owner it is your responsibility to ensure their safety. By following these disaster guidelines you will be protecting your pet and most definitely increasing their chance of surviving the next big disaster!

Steps To Take Before A Disaster Strikes

Make sure that your dog or cat has their collar with their ID on it. Even better, microchip your pet. Many times during a very big disaster your pet can lose their collar. If your pet becomes lost and has a microchip you are more likely to be reunited.
Keep an up to date photo to post of your pet in case you are separated from them. This way you will be more likely to be reunited.
Keep your pet up to date on all of their shots and keep them filed in your pets own "Survival Bag."
Clear your yard of any debris that could fly through the air and hit them during a big storm such as a hurricane or tornado.
Anchor down outside structures such as sheds that could be picked up and thrown their way during a storm.
Anchor down inside appliances such as televisions and your china hutch that can fall over onto your pet during an earthquake.
Find out ahead of time if your local community has pet shelters where you can take your pet if needed. Many times, such as during a hurricane, you will have ample notice ahead of time to bring your pet here.
In your pets survival pack make sure that it includes a pet first aid kit, all of their vet numbers, vaccination records, pet medications, favorite blanket, toy and enough food to last at least 72 hours.
Don't forget a can opener if your pets food is in a can!
Have 1 Gallon of water per pet, per day on reserve for a minimum of 72 hours. Smaller dogs will not require quite this much water. This is for drinking and bathing.
Periodically check the expiration date on their food and replace when necessary. Pet food usually has around a 6 month shelf life. Pet MRE has a 5 year shelf life.
Have their crate on hand to protect them once the storm, hurricane, tornado occurs.
Know your pets favorite hiding places. Your pet will probably be very scared during the disastrous event, run and hide.
Have your pets favorite toy on hand in case you need to coax them out of hiding.
Steps To Take During A Disaster

Try to remain as calm and collected as you can. Our pets often sense our fears and can feed off of them.
Put them in a hard carrier crate to protect them from getting hurt or running away.
Have their favorite blanket and toy inside the crate to ease their fears.
Giving your pet a lot of love and reassurance will help them feel better and you as well!
Steps To Take After A Disaster

Check your pet for any injuries and use your pet first aid kit to doctor up any cuts or scrapes.
Keep your pet on a leash. There could be many spilled chemicals, glass, downed power lines and other dangerous objects that can harm them.
If you are separated from your pet, take an updated photo of them to your local shelters and vets. This will aid in their safe return.
Remember that in some disasters, such as earthquakes, there can be days or even weeks of frequent aftershocks. Again, lots and love and reassurance will help to calm them.
Taking the necessary precautions before, during and after a big disaster will help to protect your pet and most definitely increase their chance of survival. Our pets are family members too so looking out for them is just as important. Please take all the necessary precautions listed in this guide to ensure your pets well-being!
